Experienced, Professional Dog Grooming, focusing on small breeds. Open since 2001.

Build Trust. We know that leaving your dog with someone involves trust. We welcome you to visit our salon and meet us during regular hours, to help you decide if we’re a good fit for you and your dog. Bring your vaccinated puppy along for a meet, greet and treat! Our shop is open concept: when you visit, you can see everything.
Build Relationships. When we groom your dog regularly, we build a relationship with our canine clients based on trust. We keep our shop small on purpose, so that your dog doesn’t have to deal with staff turnover or a different groomer every visit. When your dog sees the same two people each visit, there is a routine and relationship they can depend on.
Save Money. You shouldn’t have to stretch out grooming visits because grooming is just too expensive, and you shouldn’t have to compromise quality either. Our fees are based on the time we put into our clients, not on what we think we can get out of our clients. We offer discounts for those dogs who have high maintenance hair types and need 4 – 6 week grooming.
Whether it’s an all over scissor trim, a clip short, or a bath and tidy, we’ve got you covered, and we offer drop in nail trimming during our regular hours, as long as time allows.
Conveniently Located in unit 211 – 3030 Kilpatrick Avenue, Courtenay BC near lots of shopping. Shop while your dog is being groomed!

Please note: New client grooming availability is limited to small dogs at this time. We reserve the right to refuse service. If it is unsafe for any reason to work with your dog, we prioritize the safety of both the dogs and the groomers. To keep all of our clients safe, we do require dogs to be appropriately vaccinated.
Open Tuesday – Saturday* 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. & 1:00 p.m – 5:00 p.m. Closed for lunch 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Closed Sundays and Mondays. *Closed on the Saturday of long weekends / stat holidays. We usually close for two weeks of annual time off starting the August long weekend.

Reading / Writing reviews? We don’t provide financial incentives for positive reviews, nor do we provide financial incentives to remove negative ones. We want our clients to be happy, and if there are issues with the actual work, we will do our best to resolve them if you contact us directly. Want to leave a review? Leave one here.

About Us

Personalized Service With a Smile
It’s different here. We are small “Mom & Pop” shop. Staying small allows us to provide a more personalized and consistent service, build relationships with our canine clients, and be consistent. While we are modern in terms of equipment and technology, we offer old-school service by answering our phone, booking appointments by phone, and reminding clients about their appointment with a phone call. You won’t get annoying emails or texts from us, and if you have questions, we are happy to speak with you. You will be speaking with the people who will be working with your dog. We keep extensive notes on the style, products used, allergies and / or medical conditions, and the grooming history of your dog.

Reasonable Rates & Discounts
We want your dog to look and feel great all of the time, so we encourage regular grooming with our frequent grooming discounts. If you get your dog groomed every 6 weeks, we’re going to give you 10% off of our already reasonable rates. If you get your dog groomed every 4 weeks, we’ll give you 15% off. We will charge you fairly for our time and we will be consistent. We aren’t going to sell you products or services that you don’t need.

Experienced & Professional
Owned by Scott & Angela Gilbert, Thoughtful Paws opened its doors in 2001. We believe in hard work, integrity, and honesty.
We have been working with dogs since 1995. In addition to our professional experience, we are passionate about training, having competed in a variety of dog sports with our own dogs. Our interest in training and behavior is definitely a benefit in our work with dogs, particularly in helping dogs to overcome anxiety about grooming.
We lost our most recent dog “Chianti” to heart disease in 2019. Chianti, an American Staffordshire Terrier had performance Titles in Obedience,Tracking, Rally O, Canine Dressage, and DockDogs as well as her Canine Good Neighbour. You can read about Chianti’s adventures here. We will someday get another dog, who will have large shoes to fill.
